Reverend Doctor Johnny Clarence Bachus was born December 16, 1935, in Hernando, MS. He married John Ella Johnson on January 2, 1958. They have five children: Patrick Bachus (Vasheila Bachus), Johnny Ruth Griggs, Anita Mims (Rev. Marvin Mims Sr.), Rev. Rodney Clarence Bachus, Sr. (LaTanya Bachus) and Timothy Bachus. They have 12 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. He was called to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ on January 1, 1966. Rev. J. C. Bachus preached his first sermon at Rising Sun Baptist Church, in Hernando MS, which was his membership church. His first sermon at St. Mark Missionary Baptist church was in August of 1966. He was called as Pastor of St. Mark in October 1966 and preached his first sermon as the pastor the 1st Sunday in November 1966. He earned a Master’s Degree in Religion from Rev. Dr. Herbert H. Brewster School of Religion. He received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Tennessee School of Religion. He served as President of the Memphis Baptist Ministerial Association from 1984-1985; Moderator of the Memphis District Association and Dean of City Union #2.
